Picking an Outfit for a Professional Headshot: Women’s Edition

Wondering what to wear for your professional headshot? You’re not alone! Many before you have walked the same road, and found themselves asking the same old question—and for good reason!

Your attire is an important part of your public persona, and if you’re keen on maintaining an element of professionalism in your resume or portfolio, you’re wise to pay attention to every last detail.

You may not be fashion-forward, you may have a quirky sense of style—but ultimately, your clothes will go a long way in defining your professional identity.

Getting Down to Business

One of the main factors to take into consideration when dressing up for your headshot is your specific line of profession. This is a first step to narrowing down your options, seeing as a fashion model won’t have the same requirements as say, a realtor or businesswoman.

Fortunately or unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to your wardrobe and styling for this very reason. On the other hand, there are general guidelines that all working women can abide by—no matter what their professional background—in order to ensure a decent headshot that reflects the best you.

1. Style and Fitting

Whatever your career or line of work, it’s important to consider the style and tailoring of your garment for your headshot. Avoid flashy ensembles and pay attention to the neckline, refraining from deep V-necks or extremely close-fitted designs. You may check off all the requirements on the list, but with a top or dress that’s unflattering for your body—no amount of Photoshop can save your photograph.

2. Pay Attention to Color

This is exclusive to each individual, depending on their skin tone, hair color and personal features. As a general rule of thumb, however, steer clear of colors or patterns as they can be distracting. Instead, wear colors that contrast. Keep in mind that lighter colors tend to be more flattering as you age, and select a color that contrasts with the color of your hair.

3. Undergarments

Believe it or not, this is a crucial component of your headshot and with the wrong bra, you can end up ruining a perfectly decent shot. A good photographer pays attention to lighting and shadows, which often brings attention to concealed articles of clothing that are sheer, lacey or bright. Play it safe and go with a pastel or nude shade of bra that is perfectly fitted for your frame.

You may not be a fashion model; you may not even have an eye for clothes—but when you dress up for a professional headshot, how you dress can make or break first impressions. At the end of the day, a professional headshot is your way of communicating with prospective employers. Get it right on first attempt by hiring a photographer who’s been around the block!
